Light:
Form and Order Maker
The aim of this project is to understand how the use of light can effect the spaces of a building. Light can accentuate an important feature or space and can also be used to make a space feel larger or smaller than it really is if it is controlled well.
You have been selected to design a proposed non-denominational chapel located on the campus of Farmingdale State College. The College wants this to be a profoundly spiritual place that people of all faiths can worship and reflect on life’s events. The College believes this can be achieved by the creative use of light. The College has outlined a preliminary program that is listed below. A site has yet to selected on campus; the College is looking for guidance from the Architect. The building should be integrated into the fabric of the campus. The College explicitly requests the design not be symmetrical

SITE SELECTION:
The best place to start designing a non-denominational chapel would be the south-east region, on the opposite end of Cutler Hall, in front of the open grass space. The chapel is going to be in a designated spot that would allow for the most natural lighting. While researching natural sunlight and identifying when and where it hits Farmingdale State College the most throughout the year, I have found specifically during the month of September 23rd and March 20th the sunlight will peak along the south-east region of the campus. The south region lighting will occur mostly during the month of December 21st. Lastly, June 21st which is the peak of sunlight will move passed the east and south region, reaching almost the west and north. Placing the chapel in a perfect position to where natural light will pass through the building needs to be accomplished. Another aspect to consider is the other building surrounding the chapel if there are taller buildings in front of or behind the chapel, that wouldn’t allow for natural lighting to bestow upon the chapel. This is why I have chosen this specific placement because it is ideal for natural lighting and due to the simple fact that the surrounding buildings around the chapel are only one to two story’s high. When first designing a building, a note to add is the existing patterns that will be surrounding the building. The other buildings in the area are built with unique shapes, a building such as a chapel that is made with outgoing features would go well to fit in with the existing buildings. Dewey hall and Orchard hall are dormitories that are near the east wing of the campus, and more towards the south, we have the Health and wellness center. These buildings are used mostly for admissions and student services, designing a non-denominational chapel in this facility would not throw off the balance between academics and student life. Therefore, we can conclude that the chapel would be perfectly placed in this area for students and faculty to enjoy, whiling making an excellent addition to the Farmingdale campus.
